Prevention & Early Detection
I never imagined I would begin screenings for the prevention and early detection of Breast Cancer at such a young age. My lifetime risk due to family history is more than double that of an average woman. One positive thing is that I don't have the BRCA1 mutation(s), so I'm very grateful for that! My lifetime risk is scary, but I also have to think in terms of: Knowledge is Power. I have this information now and have the ability to be proactive, and that's a good thing! Every six months, I go in for screening and an office visit with the high risk clinic. I was practically petrified during my first couple screenings, and still carry some anxiety when I go in, but it has gotten better with time. The hardest part is waiting for the results. So far I have had good news each time. Even though I've had good results for my screenings thus far, I still carry quite a bit of anxiety around the topic.
